How can i open a link which is displayed by just some undefined characters when clicked in Internet explorer 8?
Q. When i click on the link with Int. Exp. 8, a web page containing only some undefined characters appears, while with Int. Exp. 7 it can be opened quite well.

A. If you are having trouble using a site in IE8, but it worked in IE 7, I recommend 'Compatibility Mode' a feature in IE8 which lets you browse pages that aren't up to speed with IE8 technology. Compatibility Mode makes them load just as well as they did in IE7 or 6, but with the security and speed of IE 8. This link is helpful in explaining how to use Compatibility Mode: -Kyler IE8 Outreach Team

For what value of y is the expression undefined?
Q. I really need help with this. :( For what value(s) of y is the expression 2x+5/4y+2 undefined? Thank you so much to whoever can help.
Asked by Peter T - Sun Apr 12 20:58:55 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can't have a denom of 0, so just set the denom not equal to 0 and solve it like you would for a regular eqn (I'm using '=' to mean 'not equals') 4y+2 = 0 y = -1/2 So y can't be -1/2 or the denom is zero and the world will explode.

How do I demonstrate that the following Integral is undefined?
Q. int((x^2-16*x+64)/(x-6), x = 3 .. 7). I used long division to make this into two proper rational functions that can be integrated, int(x-10, x = 3 .. 7)+int(4/(x-6), x = 3 .. 7). Substituting the limits of integration gave me -71-4ln(3). I can't see why the original integral is undefined.
Asked by theswedishfish710 - Mon Nov 3 21:26:46 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. (x - 16x + 64) / (x - 6) dx from 3 to 7 = (x - 10) dx + 4 / (x - 6) dx both from 3 to 7 the second integral is undefined at x = 6 which is in the interval [3,7] The second fundamental theorem of calculus requires that f(x) is a continuous real-valued function defined on a closed interval. 4/(x-6) does not meet the criteria on the closed interval [3,7] proved.

How do undefined terms, defined terms, postulates, theorems, and proofs...?
Q. How do undefined terms, defined terms, postulates, theorems, and proofs come together to create the tools that mathematicians use in Geometry?
Asked by farmer - Mon Sep 17 00:52:45 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't know if this will help, since I'm only in 9th grade and in geometry, but in class, we use all of those things to make theorems and proofs that can prove or disprove a previous theorem. However, Postulates and undefined terms just have to be believed, becuase a postulate is a truth, and undefined terms (point, line, and plane) are...well...undefined.

How do you perform mathematical operations with "undefined" numbers?
Q. For example, when trying to prove the identity of Tan(a+pi/2), you must add Tan(a) to Tan(pi/2). So, technically, you are adding a real number to something that is undefined. What do you do in this situation? Do you just drop the undefined and replace it with 0? But wouldn`t this be incorrect because the Tan of pi/2 is 1/0 and not 0? Also, you must multiply with this same undefined number.
Asked by Dia - Wed Jan 30 22:21:22 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is difficult to explain Tan functions without graphical tools. You cannot treat a functions the same way you would a variable. You must use trig identities to solve this particular problem. Trig Identities say that Tan (a+Pi/2)= -cot a The reason for this strange occurrence can easily be seen on a graphic display but the +Pi/2 is simply shifting the graph of Tan back and forth along the axis. To test your theory you can make up your own functions like f(a)= a^2; if we now let a=x+2, this does not mean that we can use f(2)+f(x)=4+x^2 as this is not the correct answer; because the true answer is f(x+2)= (x+2)^2 = x^2+4.x+4 ; the same reasoning goes for Tan(a+ Pi/2).

A. the answer is infinity since it is saying the limit as it approaches infinity, by looking at the graph of y=1/x, as x get closer to 0, y increases dramatically, therefore we say it goes to infinity

A. You could braid your hair before you go to bed. Make sure it's damp when you do this. You could also use a night cap, it's like a shower cap, but made of cloth instead of plastic or vinyl.

Q. What do you call a term in Math in which there are no correct answers? undefined?
Asked by Ismael Jr. - Wed Nov 14 09:19:49 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. An expression with no reasonable value is said to be undefined. For example, 3/0 is undefined. (There is no reasonable way to make any sense of division by zero.) An equation such that no values for the variables make it true is said to have no solution. For example, the equation x = x + 3 has no solution. So "undefined" is used when an expression has no value, and "no solution" is used when no number(s) satisfy an equation. It is not really correct to say "x = x + 3 is undefined," because the equation is defined perfectly well; it's just that no number x is a solution to it. EDIT: Shacor, your copying of my answer almost verbatim, substituting different numbers, is not appreciated. Your duplicate answer does nothing to help the… [cont.]

Is it possible for the Coefficient of Variation to be negative or undefined?
Q. According to two stats books that I am working with, the Coefficient of Variation is the Variance divided by the Mean. Since the Variance is always positive and the Mean can be zero or negative, doesn't this mean the Coefficient of Variation can be undefined or zero? What does it mean if it were? Would it make sense to define the CV in absolute value?
Asked by mathsmart - Mon Jun 26 18:38:47 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, the coefficient of variation can be negative, undefined, or zero. That is because the mean can be negative and the mean or sd can be zero. Now in situations in which the coefficient of variation makes the most sense to use, it wouldn't be negative or zero. That is because it only really makes sense to talk about the coeffiecient of variation when the variation of the data is is of the same maginitude as the mean. That means that if the mean is large, the sd is large. One example I give my students is to compare the variation in measurements of the distance from the Earth to the Sun and from the nucleus of a hydogen atom to its electron. Of course the measurements from the Earth to the Sun would be more variable, but that is… [cont.]

(-12,11),(-12,-9) I used the formula y2-y1/x2-x1 so I plugged in the coordinates with this formula and did -9-11/-12-(-9) which = -20/-3 would this be undefined since they dont divide evenly or did I do something wrong with the problem? Oh thank you! That makes more sense!

A. Hi You were mistaken in your calculation. y2-y1 / x2-x1 = -9-11 / -12-(-12) = -20 / -12 + 12 = -20 / 0 If the denominator is 0, the slpoe is undefined. Your line is vertical : slope undifined If the line were horizontal, the slope would be 0. Hope it helps Bye !!!

Why is any number divided by 0 undefined?
Q. My mathematics professors would use an example using money and amount of friends you have. They'd say something along the lines of, "if you had to distribute $6 to 2 friends, $3 would be given to each of them. If you had $6 and 0 friends to give your money to, it wouldn't be logical because you're distributing $6 to nobody." What pops up in my mind, under that logic is, "what if you had 0.1 friends?" Under the logic of division, your money magically grows to $60? Is there any logical, scientific explanation or proof as to why anything divided by 0 is undefined?
Asked by sephrem99 - Wed Sep 30 04:23:57 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just think of anything divided by zero as being infinity, and then realize that infinity doesn't exist. If it did exist and you happened to reach it, then you'd quickly see that there's still more to go to reach infinity. Ad infinitum. Therefore infinity doesn't exist. And therefore a number divided by zero doesn t exist and so it is undefined. As for your $6 growing to $60 when given to 0.1 friend, keep in mind it would cost him his $60 to buy a $6 shirt from you (or any other whole person). So no net gain.
