From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Snowboards are boards, which resemble a wide ski, with the ability to glide on snow. Users of such equipment may be referred to as snowboarders. Commercial snowboards generally require extra equipment such as bindings and special boots which help secure both feet of a snowboarder, who generally rides in an upright position. These type of boards are commonly used by people at ski hills or resorts for leisure, entertainment and competitive purposes in the activity called snowboarding. HistoryState quarter design commemorating the first snowboard being invented in Utah Main article: Snowboarding#HistorySome argue that the first snowboard was invented by Sherman Poppen in 1965 and was called a Snurfer (combination of Snow Surfer). The snurfer was fairly simple and had no bindings. However the state of Utah claims that the first snowboards were developed and manufactured there in the early 1970s, and was commemorated in 2007 by the United States mint among the three semi-final designs of the Utah state quarter. At least one source believes that Jake Burton Carpenter (founder of Burton Snowboards) and/or Tom Sims (founder of Sims Snowboards) invented snowboarding. In 2008, selling snowboarding equipment was a $487 million industry. In 2008, average equipment ran about $540 including board, boots, and bindings. UsersThere were 6.6 million riders in 2005. Females comprised 25% of snowboarders. In 2008, there were 5.1 million participants. Manufacturers believed that the decrease in the number of riders was because of poor weather. GNU Free Documentation License What is the best snowboard for a begining snowboarder? Q. I am not a total beginner. I would like a snowboard that has real foot-locks and is fit for slopes at an a verage ski resort. Thanks! Asked by Laffmaster - Sat Nov 24 10:28:16 2007 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments A. There is no such thing as "the best snowboard for a beginning snowboarder" or best for any other thing for that matter. First get snowboard boots that fit really well. Then start looking for boards and bindings. As a beginner, you will not gain anything by getting a more expensive board, but with comfortable boots, you will have more pleasure (and therefore time) to develop your riding. Once you have those perfect boots, start looking at boards: brand does not matter much at this stage. Q. Here is some information: I am a Freestyle Snowboarder Shoe Size 9 Weight: 104.6 POUNDS Height: 5 feet 3 inches Gender: Female So can you help me or is that no info at all? Also Can I ask what size snowboard I should get? I'm planning 143? Hope you can help. Asked by Lancer C - Sat Nov 7 09:02:36 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Typically you should downsize a half size to a full size for snowboarding boots, the reason why is because with time the boots will actually pack out with use. If you get boots that already fit loose with time they will only become really loose negating control over the board and possibly causing a foot injury. Your toes should just be touching the end of the boot but no crunched, it would be smart to try a bunch on with your boarding socks till you find the ones that fit like a glove. As for the size it would depend on the type of riding you're looking to do but I would try these size ranges.
