A parachute and a box start to fall with an opposing force of 30N. The total mass of the parachute and the box?
Q. A parachute and a box start to fall with an opposing force of 30N. The total mass of the parachute and the box is 5.0kg. Find the resultant force. The parachute and the box now landed on a tree and the box got separated from the parachute and starts to fall from rest to the ground in 2.4s. Find the velocity with which the box strikes the ground. Find the average velocity during its fall. Find the distance fallen.

A. Weight = mg = 5*9.8 = 49 N Resultant force = 49 - 30 = 19 N Box initial velocity at tree= 0 s= ut + 1/2 gt^2 s= 0 + 1/2 * 9.8 * 2.4* 2.4 s= 28.224 m Distance fallen = 28.224 m Av. vel= distance/ time = 28.224/2.4 = 11.76 m/s

A. Use your excellent knowledge of impulse dp = M dV = f dt; where dp is the change in momentum for the egg of mass M as its impact velocity V goes to zero over some impact interval dt. The impact velocity V = sqrt(2aH); where H is the height of the drop and a = g(1 - D/W) is the acceleration as the egg and device (your paper and tape) with weight W = (m + M)g and drag D fall to the ground below. g = 32.2 ft/sec^2 or 9.81m/sec^2 depending on the units you are using. m is the mass of your paper and tape device. The force f, in the impulse equation, is the thing that will break your egg. The force on the egg f is dp = M dV/dt = f; so it's proportional to the force F on the whole thing. That is f = (M/(M + m))F. I mention this because… [cont.]

Why does a parachute jumper hit the ground w/ bent knees and then roll to a stop?
Q. Why does a parachute jumper hit the ground with bent knees and then roll to a stop? I don't need an elaborate explanation. This is just a physics question I am stuck on in our unit, Momentum and Impulse.
Asked by delilah - Thu Jan 3 20:10:11 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It is called a parachute landing fall or PLF. A PLF is used to distribute the force of landing over the body so that you can prevent breaking an ankle or leg. By hitting the ground with the knees together and relaxed the jumper will roll onto the side on one leg, to his/her butt and then back. I have done many PLFs during my first year of skydiving but now I can land my canopy softly and standing up nearly every time.

How many feet does it take for a skydiving parachute to open?
Q. I was wondering how many feet it takes for a skydiving parachute to open. Please list your source.
Asked by King ofda Cage - Tue May 13 19:08:26 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. the distance you travel during the opening sequence is a function of the type of canopy, the packing method and your velocity and altitude. When I pull my main at terminal velocity it takes about 700 to 900 feet for free fall for the canopy to open. My reserve on the other hand would be completely open and flying in less than 400 feet. If I deploy the parachute as soon as I exit the aircraft I can open in the prop blast and be open on or nearly on the same level of the aircraft.

How does air exert an upward force on the parachute?
Q. How does air exert an upward force on the parachute? A parachute slows your descent after you jump out of a plane. In the parachute's frame of reference, wind is blowing upward toward it and its large area creates a great deal of upward drag force. This drag opposes your weight and slows your fall.
Asked by twinklingstar - Thu Jan 10 05:21:22 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. it actually occurs due to viscous force exerted by any fluids like air...since surface area of parachute is more more viscous force acts upon it

Would a parachute attached to the egg provide enough cushion to keep it from breaking?
Q. How high could you drop an egg attached to a parachute?
Asked by Nicole T - Fri Feb 22 14:54:00 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I was in an egg drop contest and the one's with parachutes did best. It is possible for it to not break with the parachute alone, maybe 25% chance, but you'll do much better if you have a cushion underneath or can wrap the egg. The contest I was in, we droopped it from 10' I believe. Mind you this is EXACTLY how NASA landed the 2 rovers on Mars several years ago so they would not break. Did you know they are still going? They dropped them from a height of a few million miles.

A. To get to the solo level, you need AFF Level 14... I know of shops that will take you from 1 to 14 for about $2,000. A decent chute (main canopy) costs about $1,700 to more than $2,500, new. You'll need more than the chute itself though. You need 25 logged jumps to get your USPA 'A' license.

A. Some small general aviation aircraft such as Cirrus have built in parachutes. Putting them on large aircraft such as airliners would not be practical because of the size and weight that the parachute would take to work in aircraft of that size. Also, deploying the chute would require that the aircraft slow considerably before its use. In the smaller aircraft it has its own caveats. You still have to slow enough before deploying it. Last winter a Cirrus going over the Sierra in No. California iced up and went into a dive. The pilot attempted to use the chute and it wound up causing the plane to break up in mid air. That's about what would happen to a large aircraft that suddenly found itself out of control and hurtling towards the ground at… [cont.]
