Whats the difference between Lacquered and Oil finished solid wood flooring?
Q. Having decided to go with solid wood flooring, i have another conundrum, what type of finish is bets. Having looked at whats available, i'm seeing Oil finished for 60 - 70 per sq m and Lacquered from 30 + per sq m. Now i have about 30 sq m to do, so the cost difference is fairly huge, but i don't want to regret what i put down.

A. "laquered" is varnished with a wear resistant material, "oil finished" is treated with an oil e.g. teak oil. The laquered is probably the easiest to maintain, but in my opinion the oiled timber has a much more natural finish but does require re-treating from time to time. Also check out the thickness of the boards, sometimes the laquered is much thinner.

How do you clean a finished wood dining table?
Q. I have a finished wood dining table. It is a light color wood and I think it is maple. The thing is that with three kids (and no table cloth because it got torn a while back and was never replaced) I do have some sticky spots on the table. My family does use place mats at every meal and we do wipe up spills quickly. But these sticky spots are more towards the center of the table. I've tried wiping them down with a wet cloth to no avail and I don't want the wood to warp. Any ideas?

A. If the substance on your table is oil soluble, you can use lemon oil on a soft rag and rub until the sticky area dissolves and is cleaned away. Finish by cleaning the entire table top with lemon oil and wiping it well to clean off the excess. You might also try Murphy's Oil Soap (a liquid just for cleaning wood.) It does an excellent job. Hopefully, the finish on your table has not been damaged by something that partially dissolved the finish leaving a sticky residue. If the lemon oil and Murphy Oil Soap do not clean the table top, you may have to refinish it. If the finish is damaged, you can try something like Formby's 'Refinisher' that partially dissolves the finish and allows you to clean the sticky areas and then reapply a new… [cont.]

What is the best way to smooth out a rough finished concrete floor?
Q. This floor is in a hunting cabin we purchased. The room is 20x25. The slab is not finished with a float. It looks as if it was raked with a yard rake. It has a really rough surface with gravel showing and not level. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

A. Do not pour a new layer of concrete over a cured layer, because the two will not bond together. That kind of pour is called a "cold joint". One solution is to use an epoxy filler to smooth out the surface. Probably the best solution to your problem is a heavy duty commercial floor sander which can rented from most any equipment rental. Be sure to wear full body protection and a respirator while sanding, because the fine silica dust is extremely damaging to the lungs. Silica goes into the lungs and never comes out. Best thing to do is to hire a professional concrete finisher.
