From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Snowboards are boards, which resemble a wide ski, with the ability to glide on snow. Users of such equipment may be referred to as snowboarders. Commercial snowboards generally require extra equipment such as bindings and special boots which help secure both feet of a snowboarder, who generally rides in an upright position. These type of boards are commonly used by people at ski hills or resorts for leisure, entertainment and competitive purposes in the activity called snowboarding. HistoryState quarter design commemorating the first snowboard being invented in Utah Main article: Snowboarding#HistorySome argue that the first snowboard was invented by Sherman Poppen in 1965 and was called a Snurfer (combination of Snow Surfer). The snurfer was fairly simple and had no bindings. However the state of Utah claims that the first snowboards were developed and manufactured there in the early 1970s, and was commemorated in 2007 by the United States mint among the three semi-final designs of the Utah state quarter. At least one source believes that Jake Burton Carpenter (founder of Burton Snowboards) and/or Tom Sims (founder of Sims Snowboards) invented snowboarding. In 2008, selling snowboarding equipment was a $487 million industry. In 2008, average equipment ran about $540 including board, boots, and bindings. UsersThere were 6.6 million riders in 2005. Females comprised 25% of snowboarders. In 2008, there were 5.1 million participants. Manufacturers believed that the decrease in the number of riders was because of poor weather. Q. I am wondering what brand of snowboard is best for my money? Are Palmer, Burton, Ride, and K2 as good as they say they are? Asked by cartkauffman - Sat Feb 17 13:01:41 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. All the brands you have mentioned are goods makes, and all four of those companys would have a board that would suit you and they type of riding you want to do. Palmer nowadays tends to make more freeride boards than anything else but they do still make freestyle boards, ive never ridden a palmer but alot of people rate them really highly especially freeriders. Ride,Burton and K2 make boards for all types and levels of riding and are all highly respected, but the only problem with the makes you have mentioned especially Palmer and Burton is that there boards can be a bit pricey at times and are not the best value for money. The best value for money board i can think of is the Atomic Hatchet seriously that board should be double the price… [cont.] Answered by baz75 - Mon Feb 19 15:26:11 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "snowboard"
